Spirited Comments From Our Guest Book
Dear Karen and Andy- My girlfriend Millie and I stayed the last four night with you, three of which were in the Napolen Room (#5). I already journaled someone of this in your guest book, but I wanted to describe what happened to me the last 2 nights of my stay, esp. since one thing in particular I didn't read in anyone else's testimonies and the séance will be tonight. Tuesday, Sept. 24th, 2002 We opted to sleep with the lights that night (like that would really help us). I heard the sounds of someone moving furniture all over the house, like my friend the two nights before. I also had a sense someone was watching us in the room, but hadn't seen anyone. At 1:30 AM, my friend and I starkly woke at the exact same moment, and felt an immense presence in the room. It was much larger than the presence of a human. During this feeling, I had the sensation of a soft caress on my foot and up my leg, followed by fingers caressing my scalp and hair. I couldn't think about sleeping the rest of the night, but continued to have the sensation someone was watching me until about 4:30 AM. At that point, all noises died out. Wednesday, Sept. 25th The hurricane was starting to move in, and we were the only ones in house that night. Around 10:30 PM, I heard the "normal" noises of furniture moving. At 11:30 PM, I heard the distinct sound of a small child's music box playing in the hall. It lasted over a minute. As soon as I laid my head down to go to sleep, I had the sensation again of a soft caress on my foot and up my leg. Sometime during the middle of the night, I woke in a daze to feel the bed moving up and down, as if someone was gently jumping on it. Quite a strange feeling! When leaving the house at 4:00 AM to catch a taxi for an early flight, my friend turned around to look up at the balcony of our room, and saw a dark figure in the window watching us leave. Maybe he/she was sad to see us go?! Thank you for the wonderful hospitality and sharing of your experiences about the spirits. There are stories we know we will be telling our grandkids! Since I had so many encounters with the little girl, I would be curious to knowif I somehow look like her mother. Do you all have any additional information or resources about her and/or her mother? Please let me know how the séance went tonight, and I hope you all are spared from the hurricane. Take care. Kelly Pursley, Seattle, WA {checked out 9/25/02, e-mailed 9/25/02) <LATEST ENTRIES BEING KEYED IN > Great stay. Heard rapping noises in bedroom at 1:30 am on the 11th. TV changer moved across room on night of 11th. Great beds. John & Toni MacDonald, FL, July 15th, 2002, Streetcar Suite #7 We were really looking forward to our stay at the Castle Inn having found it on the internet back in the UK. We spent three nights in the Jazz Emporium Room and two nights in the Gothic Sanctuary, Room 10. On the 2nd night Judy, my partner, was woken with a "start" as the bed was moving, then she felt someone, or thing, sit on the bottom of the bed. She woke me up because at first she thought it was me turning in the bed. I missed it all. At first she was afraid and wanted me to turn on the light so she could use the bathroom. In the Gothic Sanctuary our radio kept turning itself off as if someone was using a snooze button. I checked it all out. One night the light came on by itself. The last night we left the ceiling fan on in the adjoining room only to find this morning was turned off. Yes, it's true - something else lives in this house too! Lots of love from Joy and Judy Darlington, County Durham, England, July 1-6, 2002 Had a wonderful stay here at the Castle. When we arrived we didn't even know that is was "haunted." Didn't see any ghosts, but a lot of creaking in the night and someone moved my shoes very deliberately into a strange position on the floor! The maid maybe?? Will definitely come back. Jared & Sherri, Chicago, Il June 28 - July 2002, Stayed in Napoleon #5 No ghostly activity&ldots; DARN. Our teenage daughter and two of her friend stayed in the Marie Laveaux attic room and heard noises - "felt" someone was in the room; had something brush up against their legs (like a cat that wasn't there) and ENJOYED IT ALL. We got lots of picture of orbs!!! The staff made us feel right at home and the accommodations were comfy. We hope to come back soon and will spread the word about The Castle Inn. The Lege Family, June 28-30, 2002 Jazz Emporium #4 We had a wonderful experience here in your hotel and New Orleans. No ghostly experiences though we did get a lot of pictures with orbs. Thanks for everything. Ana, Pedro & Katrina, 6/22-6/28 Room 7 (Last day in Room 10) Great staff. Loved them all, very helpful. Ghost - we had a few. Turning on and off lights in the bathroom. The radio coming on by itself, three times. Something moved across the floor, did not see it, my husband heard it. Last Night: Room 6 - felt a cat move across the bed. Something moved the shower curtain by itself. Would love to come back and stay again. Will recommend to all my friends. Kat & Angel & Ambrosia, June 24-29 Room 12 3 days, 2 nights. We had a wonderful stay for the end of our honeymoon. We had a few encounters - our shade flew up on Monday morning, and the ghost hid my husband's glasses. Fortunately, we found them on the floor at the foot of the bed. Nothing else happened to us directly, but we did hear a lot of movement in the room around us. Thanks Dayna & Bradley Wright, June 23-27, Josephine's Boudoire Had a great stay for our honeymoon.. The first night of our stay was quiet and relaxing. The 24, I was taking a bath and heard three loud knocks on the bathroom door. Thinking it was my husband, I called "come in" three times. Then I heard the knocks again. This time I yelled louder and finally my husband heard me calling. He said he was not knocking on the door, nor did he hear any anything {knocking}. Later that evening I heard a cat meow. Our last evening, the 25th, we decided to call upon the spirits of the house to speak to us using a Quija board we had brought with us from NY. Immediately we were in contact with a spirit. His name was Henry. He claimed that he was born in 1854. He was a card player and used his great talents for making a living. He had many children to provide for. He claimed to have only lived to be 39 years old. We asked him many questions. He was kind to answer all of them. He stated that he likes Room #8 {part of the Room 7 suite}in this house the best. At this time I have no clue as to which room that is. Anyhow, during this session we began taking digital photos of the room. Immediately white lights or disc like shapes were showing up in the photos. Most of the lights or spirits were directly over the bed. We took many photos of the same spot - the spirits were moving around the room as they moved over by the door. I snapped another photo over the bed - the lights were gone because now they have shifted to the other side of the room. By the door there was a spirit sitting in the red chair. We caught on camera a vortex, and I mean a large vortex of energy flying up from the chair towards the painting above. It's a really neat photo. I anyone would like to see it just e-mail me. Anyhow, we gave Henry our blessings and let him go. Anyhow, thank you for the stay. Kenneth & Johanna Lazer, June 23, 24, 25, 2002 Bordello Room Thanks for a great stay. Was great for an amateur ghost hunter. Yesterday, we left our key in our room and the door locked automatically {normally requires key to lock it} After arguing about it, I went to get an extra set. When I arrived back at the room, the door was wide open and the T.V. was on. Kinda spooky. Later that night there was as mall "ghost hunt" with amazing results: the smell of tobacco and range around the stuffed giraffe. I finally got to bed, when I kept hearing humming outside our door. The dog {we allow pets} heard it too and kept staring at the door and went earlier to the door when the door started gnawing {scratching sounds outside the door}. I went to sleep with a necklace on, and awoke to find it on the table next to the couch, on top of my camera. When I awoke the next morning, both my and my brother's shoes were arranged in a pattern on the floor. Thanks for the stay. Patrick Hedges, 23-24 June 2002 The ghost took the key to Room 5. We never did find it. Freaked my wife out. Jeff Hedges First Night: My friend and I woke up this morning to find out stuff had been moved around. She had her suitcase in a couch and it was open. My suitcase was on the floor and it was closed. This morning we found our suitcases had switched places. Hers was now closed and mine was open. I had thrown my shoes randomly on the floor, and this morning they were very neatly laid at the foot of my bed. Also, we both had some of our stuff on a table in the room, and we're not sure if the table was turned around or if our stuff was moved. Nothing was hidden, but it was all moved around&ldots; The Kolegues, Room 10, The Gothic Sanctuary, 6/21/02 On our first night we kept hearing footsteps up and down stairs. Tina kept feeling something trying to pass through her. I woke up about 2 am and saw a mist like shape at the end of the bed in front of the dresser. Also, we kept smelling flower and tobacco smoke earlier in the evening {the castle is a non smoking inn}. On our second day we kept smelling flowers and tobacco smoke. We were gone all day in the French Quarter. We came back and took a nap. It was around 2 in the afternoon. After we awoke we were getting cleaned up. Tina was making he bed and found some ashes in our room. We took them down and showed them to Nicholas {our general manager}. We then went out again walking about the Garden District. Saw Anne Rice's home {three blocks away} and a few other homes. We came back to our room and out of curiosity Tina checked the bed and found some more of these little chunks of ashes. Upon going to bed, nothing happened until 11 pm or so. Tina then started saying that is was passing through her again. The bed shook a few times after that, and I awoke and could not fall back asleep. Then I noticed that there was this black shadow moving about the room. I finally fell back asleep and slept pretty good after that. Thanks for the great stay, guys. Katina & Terry Bradshaw, St. Louis MO, Room 12 (Bordello Room), June 21-22, 2002 The first night I saw a large shadow moving around the room for quite a long time. The bed was pushed once and my girlfriend and I heard footsteps continuously, up and down the stairs outside of the room until about six o'clock in the morning. On our second night, we think the spirits in the house were used to us. The window was rattled twice without the help of wind or traffic, and we too saw a flash of light in the room. It was like a camera flash, very strange. We had a great time. Thank you for the stay. Matt Rotan & Cassandra Shaffman, Room 4, 6/17/02 Thanks for a great stay. We had a very fun trip and look forwad to coming back. Nothing too scary happened except for the radio coming on by itsleft. Maybe next time. The Guillorys, June 14, 2002 Thanks for letting us stay and enjoy the house. We had a great time and learned why out room was the jazz room. We had one ghost encounter, the light flashed on by itself and the fan turned on after the flash of light. Thanks again. Dave & Nancy Guillory This place is a great place for fun and the supernatural. This house is a great location for fun in New Orleans and the ghost here continues to remind you of the history of this city. We had some great things happen: our bed shook and when we returned from an outing we found a washcloth wedged in between the windowsill in the bathroom. It was not like that when we left. SPOOKY. Thanks for a great time Scott & Lyda Hartley, 6/13/02, Room 7 Thanks for making us feel so welcome here. We didn't se any ghosts, but we did have a few strange things happen. Our radio frequently turned itself on and off. We kept checking to see if the radio alarm was set, but it wasn't. I felt something thump from the underside of the bed twice. One bight we left the bathroom light on as a nightlight. By 1:30 am when I woke up, it was off. This morning he bed shook twice! I also felt the sensation of a cat jumping on the bed, taking a few steps, and lying down next to me. Thanks for the hospitality. We love New Orleans. Julie Gaines, Murrayville, Il, Alison Russell Sparta, Il, Room 4, June 13, 2002 I had the best stay. The hotel room was just beautiful. I was curious? Is there really a ghost in the Voodoo room? P.S. Oren heard some footsteps that sounded like a child running but there aren't any children in here so we think it is the little girl that drowned. P.S. The only child that was actually here was me. Jan 2, 2002 Sara, {a child} Had a great time. Enjoyed the fun the ghost had with us. We are hoping to do this again. Steve & Chris Hollingswath, Dec 31 - Jan 1 2002 Incredible visit. We were treated as family by both staff & spirits. We had armour clang first & then had snoring and footsteps in room 10 during our second night of stay. We will definitely return! Thank you so very much. Melissa Thompson & Rowan Fox, 12/01 Someone has been watching me all day. Ben, 12/1/01 Our TV kept turning on at night after we turned out the lights. Madame Laveau's Voodoo Hideaway "Aerie" Heard footsteps on the stairway although I knew there was no one there. Went to the third floor to see. As I started coming down the stairs, I heard a man cough on the landing. But I knew the house was empty at the time. Was it the ghost? Linda Thompson & Robert Anderson, 10/20/01 My Birthday too! This vacation is my birthday present. Robert & I want to thank you for your hospitality. We had a very nice time. The majesty of all the lovely mansions (including the castle) made this area of New Orleans a perfect place to stay. As for the ghosts?&ldots; I believe "Mr. John"stole and hid our room key. It appeared to have vanished because we always left it on the nightstand. 2 days later we happened to find it in the chest of drawers that we had never touched. At the advise of the staff we decided to search everywhere possible because he has been known to play this trick on other guests! Thanks again. We'll probably be back in a year or so&ldots; it was great!
Thank you for everything. I am definitely coming back here when I return to New Orleans. Hope the hotel expansion goes wel. I better see that little sketch I drew up on your website. Thanks again. Steph Beckler, 10/6/01
{Steph, here it is, the original is hanging in our office, Karen & Andy} Thanks for a great stay. We had the best 3 nights of sleep in about a year. No big ghost experiences, just lots of loud noises at night coming from empty rooms. Thanks again. Lori & Ted Powell, 10/2/01 It's all a sham, what a big hoax. You can explain it all with air pressure, air currents, creaky stairs, and a ghost. He dimmed the lights half an inch to the left. He turned on the faucet and put the toilet to the test. I closed the door to room number five, he opened it again much to my surprise. The radio clicked and played music from 1955. On the night of last there was an occupant occupying but they were not breathing. I then began realizing that they must accommodate for the living. When he was alive and kicking I'm sure he had a favorite bed with the best set of linens A chilled breeze moved through the hall disturbing the curtains. So I asked that something a question, " If you were me, would you want to see? I'm counting to three&ldots;" The ghost showed me, the door began to creak. So I quickly scurried back to my room, locked the door quietly. Knowing all the while that this action could not protect me. Through the peephole I peered, I unlocked the door when I felt no danger near. I heard door number seven still squeaking. I said, " I know that you're here, as you are aware of I. But I will thank you if you would not bother me tonight." And with that I turned in. My last thought of the night was, I don't believe in such things that others fear most. As for rooms five, six and seven, they harbor a ghost. Bran Wagner, 9/30/01 We love staying here. We liked the lamp turning off in the middle of the night. Room 11. Tina, Alan, Kansas City, MO & Diane Mass. 8/21/01 Thank you for a lovely stay. The rooms were wonderful. I felt just like Scarlett. We may have met your ghost. The ceiling fan began turning and the pull string was missing from it. Also, my husband said he saw me in the mirror up the first step of steps, however, I was all the way at the top of the stair case. It has been truly been a memorable experience. Liz & Eric Schneider, 8/01/01 Our time here was lovely. The staff great & friendly. The ghosts, however, kept us up two nights in a row!! The first day our TV kept coming unplugged. We'd leave & it would be unplugged as we returned. This happened a total of 3 times. The second night was amazing & frightening at the same time. We saw this little girl by the stair ways. My wife saw the male black ghost once or twice that night. So we finally got to sleep around 5 am. Oh yeah, we also heard steps running up and down our stairs. No one else was staying on our side {of the mansion} that night. Around 5 am the last thing we heard was a little girl giggling. The final thing that happened was we had brought some food home from quite a large dinner when Aly & I decided to reheat our dinner. That was when we found our gift cards from Meijer in the microwave! Now I assure you being the type of person I am&ldots; I always know where things are. They were in my wallet no more than an hour before. Then they ended up in our microwave. Is this house haunted? I would say yes, unless of course I was drinking that night - which I wasn't. Other than the eerie things, we had a wonderful time. Karen's krewe was great & wonderful. We both will be back. Thank you for a great honeymoon. John & Aly Brothers, 07/27/01, Room 9 The TV went on every morning at 8 am three days in a row, but there is no timer on it. How did it happen? Miss Blanche's Streetcar Suite, Room 7, 1/2001 Our television turned on each day at 8:00 am sharp. Also our remote went missing half way in the trip and we found it the morning we left. Lourdes Cardenas, 01/09/2001 Our ghost loved his visit. He felt right at home the first night. Hid my keys and turned the radio on. Loved the red-room . Tim and Lisa Baily, {Bordello, Room 12},12/30/2000 Thanks for the great stay. It was pretty cool to have the shower turn on by itself at 1:30 am. The Ruiz Party, 12/02/2000 Loved everything about the Castle & the City. Still wonderin' who moved our bed so far away from wall late one night while we were out. Thanks again. L. & P. Smith, 10/18/2000, Josephine's Boudoire, Room 6 Hmm, not sure I could have coped if I knew beforehand that this lovely inn was known for "occurrences." We slept with the light on the first night after I was getting chills, feeling a presence. Told myself I was being silly and Kelly kept telling me noises were from the room next door. (Found out the next day nobody was staying in there.) Most of the chills I think could have been just me being a little skittish with the older house but who was opening and closing the door in the room next to us? I'm very sad to leave N.O. What an interesting city. S. Walke, 10/18/2000, The Bordello Room, Room 12 Well I tried to be strong for Sarah, but last night I got scared. Up late and noises all over the place. Doors slamming from about 2:30 am til 5:00 am. We stayed in the "Bordello" room and all the time Sarah was "freaked." I played the tough guy but I was pretty freaked out. House is great and the "presence" added to it. Kelly Lynch, 10/18/2000, Room 12 Went into the bathroom. When I came back into the bedroom, my glass had been moved across the room. Carol W., Jazz Emporium, Room 4, 10/14/00 Who moved the glass across the table? Carol Ware, 10/11/2000, Room 7 We loved the room. Great atmosphere! I dreamed I saw smoke rings coming from the sofa. I woke up and saw nothing but thought maybe I had dreamed about the ghost, will tell our friends. Thank you. Glenda & Ross Alexander, 10/08/2000, Room 11 N.O. is the coolest city on earth - no doubt. Thanx for the hospitality. P.S. Does the ghost sing? T. & A. Webster, 9/29/2000, The Napoleon Parlour, Room 5 I don't think the ghost is on the 3rd floor - I think he is on the first, at the side entrance, to check out his guests! We loved the Garden District - hadn't seen it on a previous trip to N.O. and found out that we missed the best part. L. & M. Mohr, 9/23/2000, The Crawfish Den, Room 11 I don't think the ghost is on the 3rd floor - I think he is on the first, at the side entrance, to check out his guests! We loved the Garden District - hadn't seen it on a previous trip to N.O. and found out that we missed the best part. Laura & Mike Mohr, 09/23/2000, Room 11 Room 7 is great! The bed shook 3 times! What an experience! We all can't wait to come back and visit again. L. Hotten, T. Diaz, L. & N. Resend, 8/20/2000, Miss Blanche's Streetcar Suite, Room 7 We had a great stay. I didn't hear the voices, but every time I would lean over in the bathroom in room # 7 the lights dim, stand upright and they would come back on bright. Ghost trickery? M. Ross Party G. White & D. Gallagher, Miss Blanche's Streetcar Suite, Room 7 Had a great stay. I was in the Aerie & had just lain down for bed. I started to hear a voice talking. It lasted about 2-3 seconds. I couldn't understand what was said, but it sounded like a scratchy record or one being playedbackwards. Thanks for the experience. Melinda Ross Party, 08/11/2000, Graig White, Aerie We had a wonderful stay&ldots;&ldots;.thank you for everything. Sorry about the flood!!! I think we may have met the permanent house guest, but who knows. Thank you again. Michael Stewart, 07/25/2000, Room 4 Well, I will attempt not to be too long winded. First I woul like to say that everyone working here was wonderful and made it the place I will always come back to in N.O. The first night we were in room # 12, I had a dream that there was a man in our room, sitting on the couch. He had caramel colored skin, black hair, dark eyes. I think he was wearing something tan colored. And he was cute! I talked to Wynette about it and she that sounded like the description of the ghost so maybe I wasn't dreaming. The next night I was awoken by a man's voice in my ear, he was talking in a different language - French, Spanish - I'm not sure, I was half asleep and he scared me. The following two nights there was a TV up really loud in Room 11 next door. Carrie informed me that no one had been staying in Room 11 those 2 nights. (spoooooooky!) Then finally I woke up to someone singing in our room, Kim, my friend heard it too. After that, we asked him to leave us alone and he did, neither one of us had been getting enough sleep because of him. After I woke up from my initial dream, I knew his name and forgot it. It was R-O- something I think like Roderick or something like that. Anyway, even though he spooked us, he didn't do anything harmful or make me feel unsafe. K. Moss Party, 7/5/2000, The Bordello Room, Room 12 Our 1st night in room # 4, my husband woke up in the night and saw a light on the ceiling. The next night, he said someone was shaking his side of the bed, but I was sound asleep. A. Holt, 7/4-7/5/00, The Jazz Emporium, Room 4 Had a nice time in N.O.! Room # 5 on July 1st about 2:00 am I felt someone touch my leg and it was cold. Then I heard my husban say "look, there's lights on the ceiling," and I looked up and saw them. But my husband said he didn't see anything. I tried to scream but it came out silent as in a dream where you try to yell but it won't come out. I felt chills I sweat for nearly 3 hrs. and felt like someone was watching me. Joseph & Tegun Sanchez, 07/04/2000, Room 5 Great party town! If you stay in the Inn, you may notice a man whistling at dust. The ghost evidently likes the after dinner hours to relax! C. & S. Howard, 6/25/2000, Miss Blanche's Streetcar Suite, Room 7 We had a wonderful stay. The house ghost was quite calm. Thanks again. Charlis Johnson, 06/10/2000, Room 7 I was awoken from my sleep to a chill, and a light that was omni directional. It came from one side of my room to the other and hovered over my head in the bed. This was just before dawn and it passed through the walls. K. Jefferson, 5/4/2000, The Bordello Room, Room 12 Keys dropping & cold chill Sunday night. A. Leyva, 5/4/2000, The Crawfish Den, Room 11 Lights on & off Tuesday night. D. Howard, 5/4/2000, Madame Laveau's Voodoo Hideaway, "Aerie" Thanks for a lovely place and visit. On our first night, Thursday (4/20), we had a visit from the house ghost. We had an early night - we were in bed reading with one of the side lamps on. I turned it off around 10:30 - 10:45 pm. My husband and I chatted for a bit - and then all of a sudden the overhead light came on. The only switch being across the room. I joked that it must have been the ghost. My husband got back up to turn it off. In the morning we checked to see if the light could be turned on any other way, but there wasn't. It must have been a visit from the friendly house ghost. Thanks again for a great visit. A. Baughman & C. Robbins, 4/22/2000, Madame Laveau's Voodoo Hideaway "Aerie" I heard something like footsteps and keys rattling in the hallway....turned on the lights and looked out, there was no one there. Went back to bed. The overhead ceiling fan started turning and then I heard the water in the bathtub come on. Then I heard keys rattling. Went to turn the water off, but when I went back to bed, the footsteps continued in the outside hall. Carl S., The Gothic Sanctuary, Room 10, 3/19/2000 Karen and Staff: We enjoyed your beautiful house and loved the Garden District. May have had an interesting brush with the ghost the other night - stroking my face, but then maybe I was just dreaming? Will be back, hopefully next year. Jennifer & Berley Slattum, Portland OR, 3/16/00 Before we went to bed, we noticed all the lampshades in our room were twisted and lopsided. Set them level and went to sleep. When we woke up, they were all back to the same position as before. Crane Family, Miss Blanche's Streetcar Suite, Room 7, 3/7/00
